At last Thursday’s monthly board meeting, the Rappahannock supervisors agreed to hold a rare night hearing on ordinances aimed at controlling illegal road hunting in the county. If adopted, the regulations will make it illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a motor vehicle on a public right-of-way and to walk carrying a loaded rifle or shotgun on a public right-ofway without written permission to hunt from landownei^ on both sides of the road.
Lee Bird, Washington landowner who made the request for the public hearing, noted that similar ordinances are in effect in * Culpeper, Fauquier, Loudoun and their neighboring counties.
Under state law, said Bird, it is already illegal to hunt within 100 yards of a public road but unless the violator is caught in the act of shooting, game wardens have difficulty apprehending or limiting road hunters.
