I ne colonists were allowed two meals per day. usually a thin soup. They attended church, the Anglican Church of England, 13 times a week—twice a day from Monday through Saturday and six hours on Sunday. For missing service the first time, a sinner went without food for a day. For missing it a second time, he was tied to a tree and whipped. A third miss meant confinement in the stocks for six months.
“And that meant no food, because if you were in the stocks, you weren’t working and if you didn’t work, you didn’t eat,” our guide said. He added that records indicate no one missed church more than twice.
