The demand is also high for young men and women with drafting skills. After courses in architectural drafting, mechanical drafting and blue print reading, Piedmont’s students go directly to drafting departments in local businesses such as Rochester Rope Corporation, according to Bodine. “They’re elated with our students," he said, adding that young men and women from Piedmont have earned a reputation for being well-trained and safety conscious.
Students trained in welding are also in high demand. Businesses “want to take them before we even finish.” said Bodine. “When North Anna was being built in Louisa County, they couldn’t get enough.”
The original gymnasium from the days when Piedmont was Carver High has been turned into an electronics lab with individualized instruction in circuitry, TV and radio repair. Students work at their own speed, studying theory and then verifying the text book lessons in the lab unit.
