She too was a store house of interesting tidbits. She explained that the young boys hired as runners to carry baked goods from the bakery to the tavern in colonial times had to have one important talent. They had to be able to whistle.

“Now, why do you suppose that was?” she asked to no response from our group. “Why, if they were whistling, then they couldn't eat n the same time,” she explained. She added that a second grader in one of her earlier tour groups had figured oi|t a way to beat the old systems “H< said he would have gotten a friend who could whistle to walk along with him so he could eat.”
