The tuberculosis case rate (cases per 100,000 population) in Virginia is slightly higher than that in the United States as a whole, reports Tuberculosis in Virginia-78, published yearly by the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Lung Association (VLA). The national case rate is 13.1 per 100,000 population as compared to Virginia's case rate. 14 per 100,000 population. In 1978 (latest statistics), Virginia ranked 18th among those states with the largest case rates.
"In the VLA Blue Ridge Region, there were 22 cases of TB reported in 1978,” said Dr. William E. Apperson, director of tuberculosis control for the State Department of Health. "The VLA Blue Ridge Region includes Planning District 9, with a case rate of 14 per 100,000, and Planning District 10, with a case rate of 7.4 per 100,000.
