BLACKSBURG—Use your senses and common sense to evaluate the safety of food if a food freezer stops functioning and the food starts to thaw.
Considerable time and effort, as well as money, may go into the filling of a freezer, said Virginia Tech Extension specialist in foods and nutriotion. It is natural to want to salvage as much food as possible, but safety considerations should come first.
Feel the food packages. Are the contents still frozen, thawed but with some ice crystals remaining or still cold? If so, they would probably still be safe to eat, said specialist Jo Anne Barton.
