When

Mother's Cold

BLACKSBURG — A maxim in many homes has been that when mother is chilly, children put on sweaters.

That could also fit with another maxim. When your hands and feet are cold, put on a sweater or a vest, suggested Virginia Tech Extension specialist in clothing and textiles, Beatrice Kalka.

To keep hands and feet warm, the best first step is to keep the trunk of the body warm, she said. The body’s mechanism is to first protect the vital organs in the trunk by keeping the supply of blood there. When it is sufficiently warm, then the blood flow to the extremeties is increased.

And, those who are really cold should put on a hat, she recommended. As much as 90 per cent of the body's heat loss is through the head since there is no mechanism to prevent it such as a thick layer of flesh and muscle. Those night caps that used to be popular a few decades ago were very practical in keeping people warm and comfortable through the cold winter nights, said the Tech College of Home Economics faculty member.
