On our walking tour, we visited the apothecary, a shop where craftsmen fashioned musical instruments, the cooperage, the cabinetmakers and the blacksmith. We spent a half hour in a restored private residence where Mrs. Wilson supervised dressing two seventh graders in colonial attire that she pulled from a bedroom drawer.

We admired the opulence of. the Governor’s Palace and heard why it’s referred to as a palace. ’’The builder spent seven years working on this place with the taxpayers footing the bill. They began to grumble because it was their money and wanted to know what he thought he was building—a palace or something.’’ Mrs. Wilson related with a laugh.
