Macaroni Explained Ever wonder why Yankee Doodle called the feather in his cap macaroni? Mrs. Wilson knew. To the delight of the kids, she explained that “macaroni” was the term used to describe the latest. most "with-it” fashions sported by the colonial equivalent of a fop or “jet setting dude."
She also coined a couple of new expresions that the kids immediately adopted for their own. Walking in a town frequented by horse-drawm carriages presents dangers to the unwary. "Watch out for the atmosphere,” Mrs. Wilson cautioned as someone almost stepped on top of a pile of horse droppings. The kids hooted and for the rest of the tour, shouted the same warning at every opportunity.
On another occasion, a couple of youngsters got into a minor pushing match. “Oh no. no. no.” Mrs. Wilson interrupted, stepping between the combatants before the controversy got out of hand. "Now fight nice." she admonished. Ever after "fight nice” became the standard advice for the kids to hand each other during any altercation.
We were just as lucky in the guide we drew for the candlelight tour that followed a shopping spree in new WiUrlinisburg and dinner back at the motel cafeteria.
