According to the Jamestown guide, the settlers went through a starving time when all but 50 some out of more than 300 perished.
The survivors stayed alive on a diet of boiled shoe leather, soup made from the straw thatch on roofs, dog meat and even rats. Asked by an inquisitive youngster if any had turned cannibal, the guide answered that the apothecary had been caught with his wife’s body salted down and ready for dinner. ‘‘They hanged him,” the guide added, and presumably, his dear departed spouse was returned to the grave rather than the supper table.
Leaving Jamestown behind, the kids didn’t seem bothered by the memory of that salted body. Their appetites were in fine shape as we swarmed into McDonald’s to give ourselves a break on America’s favorite junk food. They carried burgers, fries, milkshakes, apple pies and sodas back onto the bus to ward oft starvation during the final leg of our drive back to Rappahannock.
