As a delegate, Durrette introduced legislation that would have enacted “sweeping, liberal reforms” of abortion law, according to Baliles. ’Yest just recently, the Democratic candidate noted, Durrette was quoted by a Lynchburg paper as being opposed to abortion even in instances where the mother’s life is in danger.

As for his position on abortion, Baliles said he supports abortion in instances of rape, incest and gross malformation of fetuses. “I’m not in favor of easing the present laws,” the Democratic candidate added.

Baliles said he is in favor of passage of ERA. “I’ve always been for equal rights for all citizens.”
