The complete Rappahannock County companies rosters are listed in Hale’s book along with notations of when they died or what battles they were wounded in if that information is available. For those Rappahannock men like Moffett, the Poe Brothers, and Priest, whose families had some records, she provides pictures and anecdotes.
In many ways, the author of this historical work is as remarkable as the men she writes about. Miss Hale is severely paralyzed and has been since the age of six. She lives in her large family home in Front Royal and must write painfully with both hands.
Her interest in local history started when she was encouraged to enter essay contests as a child with polio. During the anniversary of the Civil War, Hale wrote a series of newspaper articles - one each week — on the events of the war a century before, The book containing these articles, Four Valiant Years, has become a collector’s item among history buffs.
