descendants of 49th veterans and with other Virginia historical groups to flesh out the information from Funkhouser’s diary. She has been able to provide details on some of the Rappahannock members of the regiment. Most notable was Captain William D. Moffett, who was the acting colonel of the 49th from the time “Extra Billy” left to take the governorship of Virginia. It was under Captain Moffett, who had been a Rappahannock County lawyer, that the regiment surrendered at Appomattox. Moffett was wounded at Sharpsburg and died in 1869 at the age of twenty-nine.
