He didn’t come from a storybook family. The boy’s father left when the twins were three. Their older brother was a trouble maker who went in and out of jail, their older sister a patient in a mental institution, their younger sister an epileptic. Their mother held down three jobs, leaving the twins to cook, clean and handle most of the household chores, according to Estabrook.
There was no miraculous storybook ending either. “He died on Christmas Eve the next year." the superintendent said. “Up until that time. 1 thought I had admired youth. I’d taught for three years. Most teachers are in their jobs because they admire and respect youth. But never before and never since has it been made so clear to me what young people are capable of," said Estabrook. emphasizing that the boy in his story had no reason to keep pushing himself to excellence and yet he continued.
“We need to set high standards. Young people can handle it." the superintendent concluded.
