was 22.40 percent. As in the county and the planning district, larceny topped the list of most common crimes with 152,912 reported, followed by burglaries with 63,8%.
For the state as a whole, the only category of crime to show a decrease in 1980 was motor vehicle theft which declined by 5.32 percent. Murders were up by 2.94 percent, forcible rape by 3.29 percent, robbery by 10.29 percent, aggravated assault by 0.73 percent, burglary by 13.89 percent and larceny by 8.21 percent.
In Virginia in 1980, a forcible rape occurred once every six hours and four minutes, a murder once every 19 hours and 18 minutes, an aggravated assault once every hour and five minutes and robbery once every hour and 22 minutes. In total, crimes against persons occurred every 53 minutes last year.
By comparison, crimes against property, including burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft, happened every 2 minutes and 14 seconds.
Statistics show that in 1980, most of the murders in the state occurred during June, July and August. Of the victims, 73.6 percent were male and 26.4 percent female. By race, the breakdown was 46.4 percent white and 53.4 percent black. The majority of victims, 55.8 percent, were between 20 and 39 years of age.
