Time-Task Problem

“I want to hear your concerns but I need to make you aware of what we’re facing," Estabrook replied, citing the “time-task” problem that exists in education today. “Go back 15 years and think what the schools have had to take on since then — sex education, drug education, death and dying, environmental education, economic ed uc at ion... The time available has not been extended. The length of the school year and the length of the school day are about the same but more and more tasks have been added.”

Addressing Martin’s concern that art be added to the elementary curriculum, Estabrook noted that other individuals insist schools should get “back to the basics...and art ain’t basics!” With all that is demanded of public education, “something has to slip,” he maintained.

He agreed with Laurie Marshall, teacher of last year's gifted and talented program, that teachers can be creative in combining different topics, for instance, a study of death and dying incorported as part of a reading lesson.
