“We've been talking about doing something for four years,” said Pat Helmer, adding that she hasn’t heard conclusive figures on projected enrollment twice in a row.
“The kids are being pulled. They have a very low opinion of the school. They have a low opinion of themselves. They see the high school as a 'nowhere’ place,” Helmer said.
With the high turnover in faculty, new teachers quickly pick up this negative impression and inadvertently project it to the students, she added.

In deciding how to describe RCHS to a foreign exchange student who will visit her family this year, Helmer said she realized she was as guilty as everybody else in the county of 'talking down’ the school.
“It isn’t a dump — it’s a good place,” she maintained, adding that there are ways of getting around some of the problems, citing the possibility of preparing lunches for both schools in the elementary school’s kitchen.
“The elementary school is in good shape...It has an active PTA, a book fair twice a year that raises money for the library...It’s time (for high school parents) to stop sitting around and kicking the school and the school board and do something
