tneir pictures in Hales Notes. - Winterton Poe was not old enough when the war began but he volunteered with his brother. Apparently, Poe was wounded at the first Battle of Manassas and crawled off into a group of trees for a day and a night before he was found. Hale says this wound may have been received at Gettysburg instead of Manassas. “Billy” Poe spent sixteen months as a prisoner of war and used the time to whittle a watch chain out of bone.
Another Amissville veteran, George Harvey Priest, was shot severely at Seven Pines but survived the war and lived to be eightyfive, regaling his grandchildren with war stories like the time the soldiers had to cook and eat horse feed to survive.
