She’s an elementary teacher and Minoru is an English instructor at the community’s senior high school.
In Japan, children attend elementary school for six years and junior high for three, the extent of compulsory education. Young men and women who want to go on must pass an entrance examination for admittance to a vocational training high school or a general high school which will prepare them for the much more difficult university entrance examinations.
According to Minoru, about 90 percent of junior high students continue on to high school, the average nationally. “In my prefecture, it’s 93 percent,” he noted, a hint of pride in his voice.
His course, the English language, is not required, Minoru said, but in practice, it’s taken by almost 99 percent of Japanese students. I haven't met any students who are learning German or
