During his conversation with California Department of Food and Agriculture officials, Carbaugh learned that this agency was prepared to issue certificates signed by the appropriated county agriculture commissioners for all produce shipped out of state if the shippers or buyers request them. These certificates would certify that the produce came from an area that was not infested with the Medfly. This certification would be based on information received through the trapping program.
“VDACS is contacting Virginia shippers to recommend that they request such certification for all shipments of produce coming from California,” Carbaugh said. “This would be an added precaution to steps already being taken by VDACS.” he added.
