Started Over Capacity
Built for a maximum capacity of 285, the high school opened its doors in September. 1960, to 300 white students, Kilpatrick noted. At that time, one to two busloads of black students were being bussed to a regional segregated high school in Culpeper, now the Piedmont Technical Education Center.
“With about 360 high school aged kids in the county, the school board built a school with a capacity of 285!” Kilpatrick emphasized.
A few years later, the high school was expanded with the addition of a shop and several other classrooms. The core facilities—offices, library, restrooms, kitchen, cafeteria—were not enlarged, however.
