Following the trend throughout the state, crime in the RappahannockRapidan Planning District is on the increase, according to statistics released by the state police in the 1980 edition of Crime in Virginia. For 1980, Rappahannock had the lowest crime rate in the district, 1.7 per 100 population. The county also had the lowest clearance rate for crimes solved, however, with 15.50 percent.
A further breakdown shows a 1980 clearance rate for the sheriffs department of 11.70 percent and 55.50 percent for crimes investigated by state police assigned here.
By comparison, Rappahannock had a clearance rate of 21 percent for 1979 with a crime rate of 1.5 per 100 population.
Statistics for 1980 show the county had one murder or non negligent manslaughter, one robbery, three aggravated assaults, four motor vehicle thefts, 44 burglaries and SO larcenies.
