Tom was part of the group that made the county library a reality. Because of his background in banking, he was financial advisor for the effort that saw the old Presbyterian Church transformed into the center of learning. He helped with repairs to the leaking roof and rotted floors, carefully taking up the beautiful old pine boards, replacing the termite ridden joists and then putting the old pine floor back down, Tilling the empty spaces with boards from the upstairs balcony. He volunteered his assistance at assembling the old metal stacks that originally held the library’s books and then was part of the labor force that did the carpentry on the new wooden stacks. Cliff Sutherland, another Jenkins Hollow resident, reported that Tom keeps a close eye on the older folks who live further back toward the mountain to see if they need anything. Tom Pillar takes the “Good Neighbor Pdlicy” this country has tried to pursue in Latin America and around the world and practices it right in his own back yard. “He’d give you the shirt off his back,” Sutherland said. “He’s a good neighbor who’d do just anything for you.”
