In 43.1 percent of murder cases, the victim was an acquaintance of the offender. Boyfriend-girlfriend relationships accounted for 5.5 percent, spouses for 14.3 percent, parent-child for 4.8 percent, other family for 6.4 percent, strangers for 9 percent and unknown for 16.9 percent.
Handguns were the most common murder weapons in 1980, used in 49.2 percent of offenses. Shotguns were used in 13.9 percent of Virginia’s murders last year, rifles in 4.6 percent, knives in 15.8 percent, clubs in 2.6 percent and hands, fist or feet in 5.5 percent.

Last week’s edition of the Rappahannock New* reported that a Social Security representative from the Culpeper office would be at the court house the second Tuesday of each month. This information was sent to this newspaper incorrectly.
On the second Wednesday of each month the representative will arrive at 10 a.m. and will stay until the last client is seen.
