A law classifying the bicycle as a vehicle is among several transportation safety related acts became effective in Virginia, July 1.
“Last year over 1,300 bicycle-motor vehicle collisions occurred on state roadways, claiming 23 lives and injuring 1,200,” said Virginia Department of Transportation Safety (VDTS) Director John T. Hanna.
“Bikers encounter potentially dangerous situations daily because motorists sometimes fail to recognize them as motor vehicle traffic. Both need to be aware of current bike safety legislation,” the safety official added.
Under the law:
