Montague, another neighbor, recalled that when Tom sold a house to a newcomer to the county, his assistance in getting settled and becoming familiar with Rappahannock was an unwritten part of every contract.
“When anyone in the hollow goes away, you tell him and he’ll run by your place to check and see if everything’s okay. He's a good friend and a good neighbor.”
Montague and Pillar are both members of Trinity Episcopal in Washington. Tom has generously donated his carpentry skills to the church.
“He did all the various kinds of crosses for the Sunday school classroom doors and he refinished the wooden baptistry. He also did the kneeling benches for all the pdws,” Montague reported.'
