“Basically. I’m opposed to passage of the Equal Rights Amendment,” Catron stated. “It will lead to another round of court battles . . . However, I’ll work to eliminate any discrimination in hiring, pay and promotion.”
The Page County supervisor said he would support legislation to provide public funding of abortions in the case of rape, incest or gross fetal deformity. “It’s much easier on the taxpayers to pay for that than to support an individual who can’t function in society or to provide mental treatment for rape victims who must rear a child they do not want," he explained.
Catron voiced opposition to designation of a state holiday in honor of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King. "I couldn’t support it due to the expense and to setting a precedent. There’s large cost associated with adding another holiday and if we did it in this case, other special interest groups would demand the same treatment."
