Selection of school board members has been an issue in Rappahannock County as well as other Virginia jurisdictions. Currently, state law allows for selection by board of supervisors or by board of electoral trustees, members of which are appointed by the circuit court judge.
Guest said he has “no particular problem” in supporting a bill which would provide for direct election of school boards. “But I haven’t found a whole lot of demand for it,” he added.
The Warren County farmer described school board appointment by board of supervisors as “a pretty good method,” noting that a supervisor who supports quality education probably will appoint a school board member who shares that view.
Allowing direct election of school board members creates a potential conflict if a locality has supervisor candidates running in support of an austerity program and school board candidates running in support of top priority for education,, according to Guest.
