In response to a request from superintendent Robert Estabrook, the Rappahannock school board at last Tuesday's meeting added four indviduals to the list of persons authorized to pump gas for school vehicles.
“I’m finding it most difficult to carry out the policy,” said Estabrook in reference to the school board’s action last year to limit gas pumping authorization to the superintendent and transportation supervisor only.
He reported that he’d discussed alternatives with bus supervisor Allie Huff and those individuals assigned school cars and had come up with a form to be filled out each time a vehicle is filled up, including name of person dispensing the gas, odometer reading and amount of gas pumped.
In addition, Estabrook proposed that Ray Burke at the bus shop garage, assistant superintendent Gerald Lysik, high school principal Dennis Wingfield and assistant principal John Toth also be authorized to pump gas.
In regard to the current policy which designates only Estabrook and Allie Huff as pumpers, “to quote Mr. Huff, ‘it ain’t being followed,’ ” Estabrook reported.
“That’s nothing new...Just as with other school policies that the board sets, those responsible ignore them and tell us nothing!” school board member Robert Eastham charged.
