Republican incumbent George Beard proposes regulatory controls.
Guest noted that he voted for the studies on uranium mining proposed in a resolution introduced by Beard in last year’s General Assembly. "But I haven’t seen much concern among my constituents. I doubt if I’ve gotten three letters on the subject either for, against or in between,” he reported.
In the contest for 18th district representative, Democratic challenger Richard Catron has charged that Guest doesn’t represent farmers or other middle class constituents.
"Mr. Catron appears to want to start a campaign of class warfare,” Guest maintained in response. “The hundreds of people who’ve received my help when an unemployment check has been late in arriving, the people who’ve had problems with the highway department or the welfare department, the folks who’ve had their license revoked because of a mistake made by a paper shuffler in the Division of Motor Vehicles—I don’t think they’d agree with Mr. Catron.” The Democratic candidate
