Warren ton, the Corner Store carried a much wider selection of merchandise with the side room that’s now devoted to antiques stocked floor to ceiling with dry goods.
Jimmy and Myrtle stayed busy serving a steady stream of customers. Saturdays were particularly hectic as the employees of the old apple co-op came to town to do their weekly shopping at the Corner Store. "The local people were good patrons,” Jimmy remembered.
Even though it was a case of mistaken sign identity that actually brought the Falls together with the Corner Store for ten years, it seems that Myrtle was destined to be a storekeeper. Her mother, Mrs. Weldon Burke, opened Burke’s Store in Woodville for Myrtle and her brother Garfield.
“We worked there as teenagers but then we lost interest and Mom had to take it back over. It was too confining for a young person.”
Then six years ago, when Mrs. Burke died, Myrtle and Jimmy took over management rather than see the business closed. Myrtle’s elderly father still opens up every morning.
