Be Careful
With Raccoons
Jack Raybourne, Game Division Chief for the Virginia Game Commission, advises that raccoon hunters. Game Commission personnel and the general public should be alert arid careful when handling or approaching raccoons this fall.
Several positive cases of rabies in raccoons have been confirmed in recent weeks, principally in Northern Virginia. Neighboring West Virginia and other southeastern states have reported similar outbreaks this summer.
Rabies was confirmed in four Warren County raccoons in June. Fauquier County had three cases in July, five in August and two thus far in September. Loudoun County has had seven cases to date with four more cases being examined. Culpeper county has had two cases confirmed recently.
According to information supplied by the Virginia Department of Health, most of the rabid raccoons have been reported near residences with at least one raccoon known to have entered a house and one person is known to have been bitten by a raccoon.
Other cases have involved a rabid skunk and two rabid foxes. Several of the rabid raccoons reportedly have smelled of skunk.
