After nearly a year’s work researching the potential environmental and health impacts of uranium development, the Board of Directors of the Piedmont Environmental Council voted last week to seek passage of a statewide moratorium on further exploration and any mining and milling of uranium in Virginia.
The resolution, adopted unanimously by the board, calls for a moratorium until it can be determined whether radioactive materials can be extracted safely and without adverse effects on the land and water resources and the population in Virginia, or whether the exploration, mining and milling of uranium should be prohibited in Virginia.
