Chappell began course work for his doctorate in 1980 at the University in Charlottesville.
He started his career in education as a seventh grade and high school government teacher in the Buckingham County school system, working there from l%6-67.
From 1%7-71, he taught mentally retarded students at a middle school in Orange County and from 1972-78 was first guidance counselor and then guidance director at a middle school in Albemarle County.
Since 1978. Chappell has been assistant principal at Madison High School.
