Marian knows trom the beginning that he is a con artist but falls in love with him; he, in turn, touched by her acceptance of his duplicity, falls in love with her and remains in town to face the music.
Todd Robinson was cast in the challenging role of Prof. Hill, and his pleasant voice and even performance kept up a nice pace for the other players to follow. Susan Dennis, with her natural manner and sweet voice, was perfect as Marian.
In the role of Marian's mother was Julie Burke, a great little character actress, who in this production braved an Irish brogue which came out quite well. David Fisher, a sixth grader, played Winthrop, Marian’s lisping brother, and never mithed a lithp.
Musical comedies usually depend on a few formula songs to assure public recognition and future recollection. In the case of Music Man, 76 Trombones is the rousing nnmber that has survived to become a staple for marching bands, and it was given a lusty revival by the small orchestra directed by Judy Bomberger. Another formula song is the romantic ballad—in this case Till There Was You, a favorite of 1950’s chanteuses and covered in the early 60’s by the Beatles who added a calypso beat. Willson wrote in a few requisite comedy numbers and then branched out with the interesting Rock Island chant which opens the play and was performed without a hitch by the travelling salesmen and Charlie Cowell (John Shanahan).
