Like many local shopkeepers. Nan has survived by trying everything. She's cut her losses by eliminating sections that don't sell and stocking those that do.

What sells rapidly in a bookshop serving a basically rural population? “how-to books, plain living books, religious, Virginia history, and cookbooks. Not selling very well are poetry, art and photography books - expensive books designed for display as well as reading.”

Nan also eliminated her original large selection of magazines and used some of the space for unusual gifts, imported objects, museum reproductions and crafts.

Each year she has expanded more, offering a diversity of services that have helped her survive. The Royal Oak Bookshop offers a title search service that enables customers to choose from the thousands of books previously in print as well as current titles. This works through several distributors and a computerized catalog.
