If the Democrats nominate Sam Wilson for the U. S. Senate, it could send Republican strategists back to the drawing boards in the planning for this fall’s general election campaign.
And just who, yoir might ask, is Sam Wilson?
Well, for starters, he is Lt. Gen. Samuel V. Wilson, U. S. Army retired,-of Rice. Among many other things, he is a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, former deputy to the director of the CIA, former U. S. military attache to Moscow, and former assistant commander of the famed 82nd Airborne Division.
His military career goes back to 1942 when, at age 16, he enlisted in the Army.
By the time he was 18 he had held every noncommissioned rank from private to first sergeant and was sent to Officer Candidate School. Then followed a procession of command and staff assignments of everincreasing responsibility.
In 1943 he was a member of Merrill’s Marauders in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, and years later portrayed himself in a motion picture about that unit’s heroic exploits.
