In 1977 he retired to his farm in Rice, where he was born 58 years ago. He is presently a lecturer at colleges and universities around the country, writes extensively and serves as a parttime Soviet affairs consultant to the government.
Politically, he describes himself as a lifelong Democrat. An associate says he is a moderate who has a keen awareness of the social. political and economic problems facing the country, along with a recognition of the need to solve them with equity and fairness.
Gen. Wilson told me he would be interested in running for the Senate only if he could see he would be able to make a contribution by serving there.
The possibility of his candidacy surfaced early last week when, at about the same time, it was learned he would be the keynote speaker June 4 at the Democrats’ state convention in Roanoke.
