Adding greater variety are the barber shop quartet numbers performed in an almost off-hand way by the "school board" which was composed of Victor Lagman, Jeff Dwyer, Bob Baines and Jimmy Freeman (who also performed a very snazzy dance).
This quartet provided the brightest moments of the night and never failed to provoke a wild response from the audience.
All four boys held their parts perfectly, and at one point, Victor Lagman took the audience by surprise with an exquisite falsetto that seemed to come out of nowhere.
Much of the comedy is provided by Mayor Shinn and his wife Eulalie (Jim McCullough and Laura Adams) who are both a bit foolish. Mayor Shinn tries to deliver the Gettysburg address as part of a July 4th celebration, is interrupted and. despite several more attempts throughout the play, never gets past “Four score and seven..."
Not exactly high comedy, but when coupled with his tendency toward malapropisms and botched epigrams, he is quite funny, and Jim McCullough has a real flair for this type of character. Laura Adams made the perfect foil as his long-suffering wife.
The River City Dancers (choreographed by Laurie Marshall) provided an extra flourish to the proceedings, and special raves must go to Kim Williams and Cristal Porter—both looked polished and professional.
Sets (by Jim Dennis and the Building Trades Class) were changed by the actors in view of the audience; store fronts rotated to reveal other buildings, and a minimum of props was carted around—all very effective. On closing night the cast (eloquently represented by Julie Burke) presented gifts of appreciation to Mrs. Barbara Sherman, the j pianist, and to Mr. and Mrs. Don Bomberger, the director and music director.
