When Nan Hathaway was 1 asked to give a talk recently i on her Royal Oak Bookshop, the theme of her talk was “it won’t work.”

Nan has been operating her business in Front Royal since 1975, and all the advice she received both before and since her opening convinced her that a bookshop could not survive in the town.

Nevertheless, Nan spent months gathering information, planning sidelines that would help round out the business and making use of offers of free labor until she finally closed her eyes and took the plunge.
