Outgunning Trlble
First District Congressman Paul Trible, the apparent GOP candidate, had relied heavily on his House Armed Services Committee experience to give him a decisive edge over any challenger in knowledge of foreign policy. But in a match-up against Gen. Wilson in this area of expertise. Rep. Trible would be hopelessly outgunned.
In addition. the Republicans had counted on being able to tie almost any Democratic candidate, at least by association, to the dread liberal quartet of Kennedy, Carter, Mondale and Howell. But such an attempt with respect to a former combat general who has never been active in politics before would appear ludicrous.
Still, for Gen. Wilson to win the nomination, he will have to capture the 1,751 delegates required and do it with his single keynote speech.
This, needless to say, will take some doing. But if Sam Wilson clears the nomination hurdle, the race to the November finish line will be run over a course neither party had thought possible only a few short days ago.
