Meredith Willson packed more people and production numbers and types of songs into Music Man than you can shake a fluglehorn at. And this past weekend at Rappahannock County High School, Music Man spilled ~ver the stage and reached the audience with all the rahrah enthusiasm that the student cast could muster.
Compared to most musical comedies, the plot of Music Man is starkly simple and devoid of subplots.
A con man, alias Prof. Harold Hill (Todd Robinson), comes to River City, Iowa, and convinces the citizenry that its youth will be led astray by temptation if they don't have a marching band to join.
Prof. Hill takes orders for the uniforms and instruments and plans to run off with the down payments, though not before taking time to make time with Marian the librarian (Susan Dennis). Here the plot thickens (a little).
Marian has a bad reputation which derives from her flagrant appreciation of the works of such known pornographers as Balzac and Rabelais. This reputed worldliness renders her all the more attractive to Prof. Hill who pursues her despite many rebuffs.
