Nan began by doing her homework: she wrote letters, read books, talked to booksellers and hounded the American Booksellers Association. They responded by deluging her with material on setting up a book-selling business.
This is where Nan learned that her shop could not work. There were many reasons: profits are tiny; a larger population than Front Royal is needed; paperwork is tedious and time-consuming.
Nan intended to counteract some of these difficulties by finding the type of location recommended by the Association.
Nan read in the manual, "The single most important factor in choosing a location is foot traffic,” Nan says, "Where is there substantial foot traffic in the town of Front Royal? There is no significant foot traffic in Front Royal. No one walks along the streets of Front Royal." i
