Rappahannock supervisors have tabled a request from Amissville fire chief Paul Poling that he be allowed to attend a statewide fire investigation, school starting October 11.
Poling explained that the five week course to be held in Chesterfield County would help him learn how to inspect fire scenes to determine arson cases. The class includes proper investigation procedures as well. Poling called it a “very stringent, rigid course.”
Poling said he thought someone from Rappahannock should be sent since the county has six separate fire departments, but has no fire investigator outside the state police. Arson inspector Jim Jessup of Culpeper usually sends someone from the state police to work with department chiefs in case of suspicious fires, but Poling said it would save time having someone local who was trained to conduct the preliminary stages of investigation.
Poling suggested that the person who was sent to school would work with the county fire association upon return to teach other volunteers how to preserve evidence at a scene of suspected arson.
