The FCC assigns set. frequencies to commercial broadcast stations to keep their signals from interfering with each other, but has not regulated “C-band” receivers since 1979. In other parts of the country the satellite dish is used to send listener response or to place orders for people watching talk shows or commercials on their television sets.

Roberts believes that such uses of satellite dishes are alternative communication methods that will be commonplace in the future.

Satellite dishes are especially important in Rappahannock for people wanting a wide selection of programming on their televisions since the hilly terrain makes it unlikely that cable television will ever come to the area, the engineer noted.

Roberts said that some of his clients have interference from similar telecommunications systems in Northern Virginia. Interference is caused by a “spillover ’ effect when transmitters near the same frequency broadcast within a two degree margin outside their assigned frequency, a variation that can occur
