Roberts maintained that possible interference from the proposed MCI tower could constitute considerable loss to property owners in the area since their property value would be affected by the investment in satellite equipment. The dishes cost between $2,000-$4,000 installed.
Roberts added that “terrestrial interference” can downgrade or altogether eliminate satellite signals. A “supression wall” can be installed at the base of the earth station to filter out the interference, but it would double the cost of the dish.
As a ham radio operator is responsible for correcting inteference from his signals, so Roberts suggested the telecommunications companies should be required to install supression walls for residents being bombarded with unwanted broadcast waves.
Jesse Pond, president of the local ham radio club, also spoke against the proposed tower as a possible source of interference.
