be granted police powers. The investigator would be required to carry a gun and would have the authority to question suspects or make arrests, Poling explained.
Investigators are called whenever there is loss of life or damage in excess of $150,000, Poling said. He added that arson is a serious problem in Rappahannock County. Last year an eight month investigation resulted in four arrests, he noted.
Poling is a member of the Association of Arson Investigators and said he is interested in learning more about detection techniques. He offered to volunteer his time if the county would pay $314.45 for registration fee and room during the week. Poling said he would return to Amissville on the weekends and would pay for his own evening meals during the course.
Poling said he had checked and found that there was “still a slot open” before he took the request to supervisors last Tuesday.
Board members leaned towards the idea of sending a sheriffs deputy to the class so the person would already be trained in interrogation and other detective techniques.
