But as often as not, she continued, rural newspapers ignore these significant skills and recognize instead the non-farm achievements of local young people, from sports to the arts and other white collar activities.
The Spellman Memorial will seek to fill that void, according to Saltsonstall.
“We will first do an assessment of Rappahannock's agricultural skills needs and skill gaps, as seen by local farmers and farm sup pliers," she explained. “Second, we will try to see how many local youth intend or prefer to enter farming, or how many already are farm ing and really need help. Third, we will try to discover if its is possible- and if so, then how—to attract high school youth to choose farming or farm support services over other careers."
A memorial board to include area farmers and farm suppliers is being planned. Among those assisting Sal tonstall are Sue Rucker, Delaplane Angus breeder; Anne Allen, program officer of a national philanthropic foundation, and William I)ietel, Rappahannock resident and executive of a national philanthropic foundation.
Saltonstal! hopes to have the memorial established in time to present awards next fall.
