The images and words in Marshall’s collages are disturbing; and they are arresting, staying with the viewer for days and days, floating up into memory to ask, “What do we mean?”
The answer lies in Laurie’s background and beliefs. “I followed a complicated path to art,” she said. “I was raised a Quaker and I was profoundly affected by the idea of God in each of us. Meaning comes from interacting with the God in everybody. That’s what my portraits speak to.
