“Before, we always had Scott (Keithley) and Ronnie (Atkins) and then 45 seconds or so later, the rest of the pack would come in. There was a big gap,” said coach Ann Spieker. “Now the pack has moved up right on the heels of our top two runners. We had Chris, Craig, Elwood and Ricky all close. Usually, David Dodson is up there too but he had problems with the heat in Thursday’s race and finished way back.”
The coach singled out Caperton for special praise. “When he ran by me at the bottom of the mountain, he said, “I’m going to get ’um up that mountain!’ and by the tone of his voice, he meant it. And he did it! He started picking off the other runners at the stretch. Passed the Warren runner in the number seven spot just a few yards before the finish. He surprised me the most.
“But they all did so well,” Spieker continued. “All the Rappahannock runners ran so close in time.
